Changing the Natural Landscape

A mountain climber will surely understands and knows the fact that the mountain is alive. The mount could feel and know the circumstances surrounding it. If there is a mountain climber who wanted to conquer the peak, then the mountain will react. The reaction can be in the form of change the weather suddenly so it will block the Mountain climber to reach the Summit.

This is also happened on our natural environment, which in fact it is alive. Because the natural environment such as mountains, seas, lakes and forests are like huge building which are composed by millions and billions of living beings in it. And thus, when this day people make changes little bit at one part of the natural environment, then it would give a reaction to people over a long chain of life.

The natural environment that we live on this earth have done the process of natural balancing process during the past 4.5 billion years. Not a short time. Since the Earth was created from the lumps of material that was blasted out from the Sun, then United and turning into a hot planet. Then later it become cold and freezes, forming water and transform into the Earth that we know today, it take for 4.5 billion years process to come to a natural balance as we find today.

Well, after the Earth is in perfect condition, comfortable to live in, then Allah created human to become His caliph in this earth.

At the mainland soil, plants and animals have formed a perfect ecosystem. The ecosystem consists of millions of long food chains is interdependent with each other. Then when on an area for example, it happens that cats had been killed, then as impact is the rat population would increase uncontrollably. Then the rats which are living in dirty places will carry germs pes everywhere, including to the human environment. So, then it will result in the outbreak of plague and cholera which happen everywhere. This kind of plague had ever happened before in the 13th century in Europe, known as the black death, events which resulting in death for 40% of the population. That's the result of changing the natural balance that was already built by nature for over the past 4.5 billion years.

Not only on the Mainland, the perfect ecosystems have also been created in the forest, Lake, mountains and the sea. The process of the natural balance of the ecosystem that is already created with harmony and perfect. When then man modifies or damages the ecosystem, it will bring a chain effect, a long chain of life that already created during this time.

Human activities which resulting in damaged to land ecosystem suach as burning the forest converting it to become plantation, digging the Earth for mining land or soil and dredge the sand dunes. Natural ecosystems in the forests and mountains will be damaged due to such activities. The natural balance which has been built for over the last 4.5 billion years will change and give impact such as unexpected plague of new disease or change on global climate, extreme weather or other natural disasters.

“Corruption has appeared throughout the land and sea by [reason of] what the hands of people have earned so He may let them taste part of [the consequence of] what they have done that perhaps they will return [to righteousness].” (QS 30:41)

Our Guru say, that the task of a human being as a Caliph of God is initially intended to protect and take care of the natural environment. Transforming the environment wisely and in well balanced, and not even change and ruin it.

Changing the natural environment usually always bring the impact of disasters. Such as now at South Jakarta today we find a mountain, Mount Salak. So, if for example happens that then man covert it to dredge its soil so it become flattened, then it will surely bring unforeseen impacts. Because of the existence of Mount Salak is the result of natural processes balance since 4.5 billion years ago, so if now the mount is lost, then it may result in a climate change, changes in the direction of the flow of rain water, and could result in any unexpected disease outbreak.

Another example is in the case of beach reclamation. Beach reclamation which is essentially aims to protect the shore from abrasion due to annihilation of sea water is initially a good thing to do. It won't give impact in to any natural damages. But then if the definition of reclamation changed to piling up the sea to convert it become the Mainland, then this would change the landscape. Marine ecosystems which had been created by natural balance as a result for over the past 4.5 billion years will be changed. Billions of living beings that originally inhabited the Sea will dissapear. Then according to our Guru, it surely will lead to the destructive impact and unforeseen consequences.

Building houses and parks above the dump grounds are beautiful, but the end results is not necessarily better than to let that place remained as the sea. Because it has already proven for over 4.5 billion years, letting that remained as the sea does not bring negative impacts to humans, in fact it is the opposite. Then we turned it into a land ecosystems, have we ever test it for over 4.5 billion years? (AK/ST)
