Stop the Commercialization of Islam

On a night during the teaching session, our Guru have been complaining of the effort of some moslem entrepreneurs who currently has commercialized Islam. Nowadays, there are many Islamic schools arises which charged expensive fee, even they charged more expensive fee compared with other public schools. This gives impression that there had been a kind of comerzialitaion of Islam.

It Starting from the Al-Quran Playground, Islamic Elementary School, Islamic Junior High School, until Islamic University, they are supposed to be low cost fee or even free, but the reality is even more expensive compared to public schools.

Not only the school, as well as other fields such as travel business trips to Mecca and the Hajj, several hospitals and health services or businesses like house of animal Sacrifices also give impression of too profiteers. The shops and boutiques of the Islamic outfit popped up with a fantastic price.

So, currently Islam had been turned into a bussiness commodity. On the radio and television Islamic lecturers appeared more like a celebrity than a true cleric. They pack the teachings of Islam became more like part of pop culture. As long as it decent offers, the theme of his preach was much favored by most people, then the show will be aired on television in order to lift up the viewer ratings.

Even at this moment, there has just been emerged a new phenomenon that Islam became merely a brand or a trade mark. There has just been emerged new products such as Islamic cosmetics, Islamic herbal medicine, Islamic medicine, Islamic Soap and shampoo, Islamic tooth paste, Islamic perfume and Islamic clothes, Islamic radio and television until the Islamic food products.

In this case, our Guru has complained a lot about these conditions. Islam does not suppose to be commercialized for business purposes, since ancient time when prophets and messengers sent by God Almighty there were none of them giving examples that the religion of God could be served as a business form. The teachings of Islam which is exemplified by the Prophet is upholding the values of integrity and sacrifice, not just a business advantages.

قُلْ مَا أَسْأَلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ أَجْرٍ وَمَا أَنَا مِنَ الْمُتَكَلِّفِينَ
"Say, [O Muhammad], "I do not ask you for the Qur'an any payment, and I am not of the pretentious." (QS 38:86)

Actually, it was very reasonable for the Prophet at that time to have creative thinking. His trade business investments which ever built with his wife Khadija ra was closed because he spent it for Islamic Struggle. Then, when he became the ruler of Medina and Mecca, he could have just asked people to collect some money for a donation of his daily life, or even he can set up businesses with an Islamic label or label of in order to struggle for Islam.

But it turns out it's not all he did. The creative minds mentioned above is what means by the verse above as making up pretentious. And afterall, during his lifetime he never make use of Islamic labels in order for the purposes of business, although the goal is for the struggle of Islam.

In terms of doing business, Islam teaches modesty and denounced the attitude of the voracious in terms of gains as many profit as possible. Because with the greedy attitude like that, then someone is willing to use Islam in the intention to bring in profit. This is like the attitude of the wicked people who lived in the time of our Prophet.

"They have exchanged the signs of Allah for a small price and averted [people] from His way. Indeed, it was evil that they were doing " (QS 9:9)

So, Islam is not a commodity or merely a product brand of some business. Because the values of Islam is not something that should have been conceived within a product, but the values of Islam is something that should be embedded within the moslem people Values such as honesty, openness, fairness and excellence are the values of the Islamic teachings which must be embedded within the moslem businessman, not on its products.
