Looking for A True Guru
In accordance with the Hadith of the Prophet, Muslims are commanded to study starting from the cradle to the grave. This means that the study is a compulsory in our whole lifetime.
Among the mandatory knowledge we have to learn is the knowledge of monotheism, i.e. the most fundamental knowledge that will lead us to the path of salvation. Why is the knowledge of monotheism? Because amongst all knowledges this is a knowledge that teaches man to get to know himself, and then get to know his God. Without getting to know his God, then humans would easily get lost in the wilderness of this world.
In terms of study, then we need guidance and instruction from a Guru that he was entirely responsible for his disciples. So instead of just having ustadz or lecturer, they were not responsible for his audience. Whether the audience understands it or not, correctly understanding or not, all of those things are beyond the responsibility of ustadz or lecturer.
A true ulama, he's not only willing to be a lecturer but also became a Guru for his disciples. Since providing teaching and education was much more compared to just lecturing. If you feel quite satisfied just by listening to the lectures from ustadz, then it can be ensured that the development of your knowledge will not have a lot of progress. And thus, in order to increase your knowledge significantly a Guru is needed.
Who is the true Guru? The true Guru is actually God who teaches something that was not known by human.
عَلَّمَ الإنْسَانَ مَا لَمْ يَعْلَمْ
"Taught man that which he knew not." (QS 96:5)
A Guru has an obligation to guide and deliver his students so they can feel and understand the teaching of the true Guru, that Almighty God through the intercession of Kalam. Guru with such quality like this is only found on a self a true ulama.
A true Ulama who is it? The true ulama is someone who is really cautious to God Almighty and he really felt afraid of God. Not because of it is contrived, or fear that is understood only by theory, but he is really feeling afraid because that he knows Allah.
"And among people and moving creatures and grazing livestock are various colors similarly. Only those fear Allah, from among His servants, Ulama (who have knowledge). Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Forgiving." (QS 35:28)
Of the many living beings like humans and animals, then there is only one kind of beings who truly fear of Allah, i.e. the ulama. This feeling of fear was later manifested by always remembering Allah at all times, and always begs for forgiveness to God Almighty.
As a prove of feeling fear to God was also manifested in summoned a polite and humble before God Almighty. Never use the word ' I ', but rather words such as ' Your Servant '. So instead of saying: 'I bear witness that there is no God but Allah", he said: 'your servant testified that there is no God except Allah." This is one example of the embodiment of an attitude of fear to God Almighty.
Comparing this with fake ulama that exist today. They never showed an attitude of really fear to Allah. When leading prayer at the pulpit, they were screaming. They use the word ' I ' for himslef and the word ' you ' to God Almighty. Really something impolite and inappropriate said by a servant in the presence of their Lord. They were seldom remembering God and very rare begging forgiveness. He thinks reading prayers and pleading for mercy once after a prayer will be enough. Ulama such as this will not be able to deliver you to the true Guru.
Therefore, for you whom have not yet found a Guru, let start looking for a Guru, who can guide and accompany you towards a true Guru. It's not easy indeed, but it's also not impossible. If we do strongly then we will eventually be able to find him.
Looking for a Guru in order to get closer to God is not just a mere of suggestion, but it is a clear command from Allah Almighty. So, it is indeed a mandatory for the believers.
"O you who have believed, fear Allah and seek the means [of nearness] to Him and strive in His cause that you may succeed." (QS 5:35)
On this day, there is no more prophet and Messenger of God, then all that remains is the ulama who inherited knowledge of the prophets and Messengers of God. So, for those of you who haven't met, look for this kind of ulama. Before end of our life came in and we are still not ready. (AK/ST)
