Songs and Chants Make Us Careless

Recently, we found at one of the social media, there is orchestral musicians which was playing with the reading of the Quran by way of singing it in soprano music. Found this, our guru feel very concerned. Because reading the Quran is indeed considered as a particular worship, that etiquette and its procedure has been exemplified by the Prophet Muhammad.

The following below is the command of Allah swt in the Quran that gives a clear guidance to Muslims in reading the Quran.

"Arise at the night, except for a little, Half of it - or subtract from it a little, Or add to it, and recite the Qur'an with measured recitation." (QS 73:2-4)

Composing the verses of Quran into the verses of the song was against the Quran text above, and also it was against the ways that once exemplified by the Prophet Muhammad.

It also turns out to be that singing a song or playing music will make the audience be careless, and this state of careless is oftenly exploited by our enemies, the devil and satan, to deceive humans. Therefore, then composing the verses of Quran into a verse of the song or chants means that it is making the verse as an ingredient to make a man in a state of careless and this will be easily exploited by satan to deceive humans.

Whereas the initial purpose of reading the Quran is to improve the awareness of the audience in order to realize and pervading truth of the word of God Almighty. On the contrary, the effect of listening to the song or chants is to loosen the human consciousness and make us more careless.

At the era of the Prophet Muhammad, there was a pagan Quraish named Nadhr Ibn Al-Harith who travelled to Roman and Persian in order to learn music and dance. After he returned to Mecca he ordered some beautiful dancers to play music, and thus he expected that the people of Mecca will be careless and forgot about reading the Quran. Nadhir ibn al-Harith created beautiful verses for his songs in order to compete with the reading of Quran. Upon this, then Allah said, as written as one of the verse of Quran below.

"And of the people is he who buys the amusement of speech to mislead [others] from the way of Allah without knowledge and who takes it in ridicule. Those will have a humiliating punishment." (QS 31:6)

Because of such things, then at that time the Prophet forbade his close companions and followers to listen music. Because at that time, music, songs and dances which were created by Nadhir ibn Al-Harith in order to turn away people of Mecca from the verses of Quran.

However, when the teachings of Islam spreaded and arrived in Java island, the things was not the same as what happened in Mecca before. Islam was accepted openly and voluntarily by the people of Java, without any conflict and hostility. Sunan Kalijaga who spreaded the teachings of Islam in Java at that time, was utilizing gamelan music and songs to call and gather the people to come. Then once they come and gathering, then he inserted the teachings of Islam in the puppet show.

In terms of utilizing song and javaness chants, Sunan Kalijaga was never composing the verses of the Quran into a song lyric. There is none of the songs which was created by Sunan Kalijaga containing verses of the Quran. This is very different with the fact that we see today.

Then our guru was also curious, why is the institution which has task of issuing fatwas, and usually it is very fond to issue a fatwa, now they were silent and turn away from this case? Singing the verses of Quran with the music accompanied it, is like mixing the one of religious worship with the other religion. We all knew the way to read al-Quran is different with the worship of the Christian believer which is mostly full of songs and chants. Why do we today find it to be intentionally mixed? (AK/ST)
