Confering Blessing to the Prophet

As for the most moslem people today, the rule of confering blessing to the Prophet saw is Sunnah, that if we do it then we will earn rewards, and if we abandon it then we won’t get sin. However, as for the true believers, who are already in an absolute commitment and their faith statement to Allah swt, the rule of doing sholawah to the Prophet saw is mandatory. Because doing sholawah to the Prophet saw is one of the instruction from Allah swt.

إِنَّ اللَّهَ وَمَلَائِكَتَهُ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ۚ يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا صَلُّوا عَلَيْهِ وَسَلِّمُوا تَسْلِيمًا
“Indeed, Allah confers blessing upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. O you who have believed, ask [Allah to confer] blessing upon him and ask [Allah to grant him] peace.” (QS 33:56)

In term of doing sholawah, our guru taught to his disciples that it must be done upon sincerity. It means that in doing sholawah to the Prophet saw, we shall not expect or ask anything in return, not even the rewards. So, it must be truly sincere.

There are many people who did a lot of sholawah but they asked for supernatural power, expecting miracle, or hope for good fortune from Allah swt. Those are the signs that tell us the sholawah which was done not based on sincerity.

Then, our guru also taught that doing sholawah is not be sung or accompanied by music. Because sholawah is not part of a song or part of music. As if we doing prayer, or when we read the Qoran, then we are not allowed to accompanied it with music, or be sung like a song.

Next, our guru also taught that the sholawah itself shall refer to the one which had been taught by Rasulullah saw before. So, it should not be come from our own creation of a good poem for the Prophet saw.

And then finally, our guru taught to his disciples that it is forbiden to sell the sholawah and take profit from it. Because the sholawah is actually a sentence came from Allah swt and then it was taught by Rasulullah saw to us all as his ummah. So, the sholawah was actually words from Allah swt, and words from Allah swt is forbiden to be sold with small price.

وَآمِنُوا بِمَا أَنْزَلْتُ مُصَدِّقًا لِمَا مَعَكُمْ وَلَا تَكُونُوا أَوَّلَ كَافِرٍ بِهِ ۖ وَلَا تَشْتَرُوا بِآيَاتِي ثَمَنًا قَلِيلًا وَإِيَّايَ فَاتَّقُونِ
“And believe in what I have sent down confirming that which is [already] with you, and be not the first to disbelieve in it. And do not exchange My ayyah for a small price, and fear [only] Me.” (QS 2:41)

As for today, we found many persons had commecially sold the sholawah for the Prophet saw with such small price. This must be something which is against the instruction of Allah swt as mentioned above and something which is not respecting the Prophet saw. (AK/ST)
