Dhikr and Wirid

Dhikr and wirid are 2 different things which are completing each other, can not be separated. Just like day and night, man and woman, life and death, both are exist altogether to complete each other.

However, many of people still do not understand the true definition of dhikr and wirid. They think that both dhikr and wirid are the same. No, they are not similar. Doing dhikr in the simple meaning is a heart activity in remembering Allah swt, being aware of His existence and being aware that this self must be always facing to the Creator. On the other hand, wirid is a heart activity which always be expecting from Allah, depending from the Creator.

So, dhikr has direction to go up toward heaven, that man’s heart is facing to Allah swt, on the other hand wirid has reverse direction, from heaven going down to the man who always be depending for himself and his life upon Allah swt. Just like breath, inhale and outhale, both are completing each other.

The words of dhikr is written in many verses in the Qoran, but on the other hand the word of wirid are none. Even the worship activity like prayer, according to Allah swt who instructed it, is meant to remember Him.

إِنَّنِي أَنَا اللَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنَا فَاعْبُدْنِي وَأَقِمِ الصَّلَاةَ لِذِكْرِي
“Indeed, I am Allah . There is no deity except Me, so worship Me and establish prayer for My remembrance.” (QS 20:14)

The activity of dhikr and wirid are done by many of moslem people, so indeed it is not a special and extraordinary thing. The, what will make it become a special and extraordinary?

The answer is the role of a guru. It needs a role of a true guru who can guarantee that the activity of doing dhikr which was done by his disciples will be truly come to Allah swt. And also, it needs a role of a true guru who can guarantee that the activity of wirid which was done by his disciples will get help and bless from Allah swt.

Because that the effect of doing dhikr will generate spiritual energy, then without guidance from a true guru who has very close relationship with Allah swt, then someone can be easily misguided. Assuming that the result of spiritual energy emanated from doing dhikr and wirid is coming from Allah swt, but in reality it is not. There are many of supernatural beings who like to have that spiritual energy, and they will be happy to accompany that one, not Allah swt.

So, the role of a true guru is very essential in giving guidance on doing dhikr and wirid to his disciples. Without guru, then someone is very easy to get lost, misguided, beguiled, or cheated. (AK/SY/ABD/NAS)
